TCS Delivers Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Location Services and Applications, Enabling Organizations to Seize Emerging Market Opportunities and Meet New FCC Requirements

TCS LogoANNAPOLIS, Md. and LAS VEGAS, Sept. 8, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — TeleCommunication Systems, Inc. (TCS) (NASDAQ: TSYS), a world leader in secure and highly reliable wireless communication technology, today announced that the company will showcase its location-based services at CTIA-The Wireless Industry Association SuperMobility 2015 in Las Vegas, September 9-11, 2015, in booth 4510.

Between regulatory mandates and emerging business opportunities, the ability to locate mobile and connected devices precisely and reliably both indoors and outdoors is rapidly becoming a must-have for public safety, financial services, gaming, retail, and other markets. To meet these requirements, organizations are increasingly turning to TCS, which ABI Research ranked as the world’s top carrier location platform vendor for innovation and implementation, citing an innovative technology portfolio, a strong roster of clients, international growth and the potential to address upcoming opportunities around indoor 9-1-1, FirstNet and LTE.

At SuperMobility 2015, TCS will highlight a variety of solutions and applications for indoor and outdoor location:

  • TCS Location Portfolio – TCS is continually enhancing its ability to anticipate and meet marketplace and regulatory requirements. In July 2015, TCS purchased the location-based technology and intellectual property of Loctronix, enabling TCS to further develop indoor technology applications both for commercial and public safety applications. Today, the TCS portfolio includes comprehensive libraries for a wide variety of applications, including inertial navigation and sensor fusion, which enables precise measurement of direction, speed and altitude.
  • Public Safety and Security – In January 2015, the FCC significantly increased accuracy requirements for locating mobile customers indoors and outdoors. “The public rightfully expects 911 location technologies to work effectively regardless of whether a 911 call originates indoors or outdoors,” the commission said. Under the new rules, mobile operators must be able to provide public safety organizations with the capability to pinpoint a wireless 911 caller’s location to within 50 meters. Mobile operators must meet this requirement for 40 percent of all 911 calls within two years, increasing to 80 percent over the next six years. The January 2015 rules will create additional market opportunities, but to capitalize on them, mobile operators and public safety organizations require a new generation of seamless, indoor-outdoor location technologies supplied by an ecosystem of highly innovative vendors, including TCS.
  • TCS Trusted Location – TCS can verify and validate a device’s location nearly anywhere in the world, in near real-time. Utilizing a variety of location technologies – including cellular, GPS, Wi-Fi and satellite – TCS’ Trusted Location algorithms calculate a “Trust Score” to report the level of certainty associated with the location and authenticity of the device. This is a powerful tool for identifying fraud, preventing “false positive” denials of services, and confirming location compliance for regulated industries, such as financial services and online gaming.
  • E-Commerce: Seamless indoor-outdoor location capabilities are increasingly important to a variety of markets, for both social and economic reasons. In addition to finding points of interest, today’s consumer wants to more easily find “things of interest.” Businesses want more accurate and complete asset management and multi-campus enterprises, such as hospitals and warehouses, want simplified inventory management – all made possible through ubiquitous location solutions.

TCS Senior Vice President and Commercial Software Group President Jay Whitehurst said: “By raising the bar for location accuracy and reliability, the FCC’s stringent new E911 rules will create additional market opportunities for location-based commercial services. To meet the new regulatory requirements and capitalize on those market opportunities, mobile operators and other companies will need vendors capable of providing location solutions that are innovative and accurate both indoors and out. With our leadership in precise location, TCS is at the center of integrating indoor and outdoor localization of people and things.”
