This April edition of the monthly ITAD Association Webinar Series will explore a topic often overlooked in the IT lifecycle: the secure sanitisation of data on networking equipment, including switches, routers, access points, and firewalls.
While most organizations understand the importance of erasing data from hard drives and servers, networking devices are frequently redeployed, resold or recycled without proper sanitisation. In reality, these devices can contain configuration data, credentials, network topology information, certificates, and other sensitive artefacts that pose a security risk if not properly removed.
During the session, we will cover:
- Why networking equipment needs data sanitisation before resale, reuse, or recycling
- What types of data are stored on switches and routers, and why a simple factory reset is often insufficient
- The technical challenges involved in securely erasing networking devices across multiple vendors and architectures
- The operational impact for ITADs, refurbishers, and brokers handling large volumes of equipment
- Best-practice approaches aligned with standards such as NIST SP 800-88 and R2v3
- Emerging automation technologies that help scale secure sanitisation in refurbishment and circular-economy environments
The session will be practical and operational, concentrating on companies involved in the IT secondary market, refurbishment, and asset recovery. Attendees will leave with a clearer understanding of the risks, technical realities, and processes needed to safely redeploy or remark networking equipment.
